Date of Conception
It is important to know your date of conception if you have been
trying to get pregnant for a while now. But medical science still does not
have a way of finding out the exact conception date in the case of a normal woman. Most often, it is an intelligent
guesswork because a woman can conceive only after her ovulation period. Hence it is believed that the date
of conception should be around twenty four hours after the date of ovulation when an egg is released from
the ovaries and gets fertilized by the sperm.
The only scenario in which you get to know your exact date of conception is
when you undergo artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization treatment. In this case, the egg is taken from
the ovary and allowed to fertilize the sperm inside a test tube in a precise and controlled manner, hence the exact
date is noted down.
Couples often tend to believe that the date of conceiving and intercourse will be one
and the same; though not entirely wrong, it need not be so. Sperms from your partner’s semen can remain viable in
your body for up to three days and hence conception can happen within the three days after intercourse or depending
on your ovulation time.
After the date of conception, fertilization
takes place and the resulting embryo gets implanted in the mother’s uterus where it stays till the end of
pregnancy. Pregnancy symptoms can vary from woman to woman but the most common and significant one is a missed
menstrual period. But there are also other symptoms that you could look out for to find out if you are pregnant.
These include bleeding, swollen or tender breasts, unexplained fatigue, nausea or morning sickness, backache,
frequent urination and food cravings or aversions.
If you notice any of these symptoms along with a missed or delayed menstrual period,
then chances are that you are pregnant. The best way to confirm this without having to consult a doctor is to
perform a home based pregnancy test. This is a simple card test that can be done at home using your urine sample.
If positive, the next step is to visit a gynecologist who can confirm the pregnancy with a detailed
examination.
The approximate date of conception or the date of the last menstrual period is used
in the pregnancy due date calculator to find out when exactly you can expect your baby. You can use an online date
calculator to find out your due date by entering the first day of the last menstrual period. Most healthcare
providers and doctors tend to use the last menstrual date for calculating the due date instead of the date of
conception as the latter is often a guesswork in most cases.
A fertility calendar is used by many couples who are trying to conceive as it helps
to calculate when the woman is at her most fertile period. Fertility is directly associated with ovulation and your
menstrual cycle and the calendar helps to keep a track of your fertile days by a simple calculation. The most
fertile period for a woman is the four to five days preceding ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.
Having intercourse on these days increases the chances of getting pregnant double
fold as the sperms are ready for the egg to be released on the ovulation day. Hence keeping a track of the
fertility days can help you determine the ideal date of conception.
You can use an ordinary calendar to track your fertility period, ovulation and
conception date. Mark the first day of your menstrual period on the calendar and the following month, mark the day
before the first day of the period. Do this for a couple of months to get a pattern and also to get an average of
your menstrual cycle length. Ovulation usually occurs mid way through the cycle; so if your average length of cycle
is thirty days, then your ovulation day will be on the fifteenth. Planning sexual intercourse three to four days
before the ovulation date is the most optimum period to conceive.
There are online fertility calendars that can do this calculation for you on entering
the necessary details. Once your pregnancy is confirmed, you can also use a calendar to mark every week from
conception to birth and also to find out the due date of the baby’s arrival.
This helps you to understand the weekly changes that take place inside your body as well as the baby’s growth; you
can also prepare well in advance for your delivery.
The date of conception, even if approximate, is an important tool to calculate not
just the due date of the baby’s arrival but also for tracking your fertility period especially if you are finding
it difficult to conceive.
