Icsi Success Rates

ICSI success rates are dependent on various factors like the rate of fertilization but before we delve further into the topic, let us take a look at what is ICSI.

ICSI or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is basically a method to treat male infertility. This technique is mostly used in men who suffer from severe male factor infertility but can also be used in couples who have a history of failed fertilization after a prior in vitro fertilization procedure. ICSI success rates are generally quite high and offers a ray of hope for couples to achieve fertilization and thereby a successful pregnancy.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection helps to overcome many barriers that both men and women face while trying to conceive. This method helps to obtain fertilized embryos which can then be implanted into the woman’s uterus and thereby allowing her to achieve pregnancy.

The main aspect of this procedure lies in picking up a single live, motile and viable sperm and injecting it directly into the egg in the central location. Now this is not an easy task and requires great skill and expertise; hence it is always advisable to consult a reputed and experienced fertility treatment specialist for high ICSI success rates.

The first aspect of this treatment is to put the woman on fertility medications to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs during ovulation; this part is quite similar to that of in vitro fertilization technique. After ovulation, the eggs are removed through the vagina by an ultrasound procedure and then incubated in the laboratory under precise and controlled temperature and conditions.

The second part of the treatment is to process the semen sample that is obtained from the male by masturbation. The semen is mixed with a special medium and then centrifuged to remove unwanted debris and also to separate the live, motile ones from the dead ones.

This egg and sperm preparation phase is an extremely crucial part of the procedure and contributes immensely to the ICSI success rates. After the live and motile sperm are separated, the embryologist uses micromanipulation equipments and inverted microscopes to pick up a single live and viable sperm and inject it into the centre of the egg. A specially designed needle is used to penetrate the outer shell and membrane of the egg and the single sperm is then injected into the inner cytoplasm for maximum effect.

The sperm injection has to be precise and exact to improve the chances of fertilization and thereby the success rate of the procedure. All the eggs that have been obtained from the woman after ovulation are subjected to the sperm injection to ensure that multiple fertilized embryos are obtained.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is an absolute necessity for men who suffer from male factor infertility or if the semen analysis yields an abnormal report. In fact a large chunk of couples who turn up for in vitro fertilization or IVF are asked to take up ICSI to increase their chances of conceiving especially if the man suffers from infertility problems or has an abnormal semen report like low sperm count or poor motility and viability. ICSI success rates for getting a fertilized embryo are as high as seventy to eighty percent and this makes this procedure extremely popular among infertile couples.

The reason behind the success of ICSI is that a single live sperm is injected directly into the egg in a precise and controlled manner and hence the chances for fertilization are increased manifold. This is in contrast to the conventional method of simply mixing eggs and sperms together for in vitro fertilization where the success rate is pretty low.

Couples often tend to confuse ICSI success rates with pregnancy success rates. The success rate of this procedure is the fertilization success rate which does not have to necessarily mean pregnancy success rate. There are many things that can still go wrong after the fertilized embryo gets implanted in the uterus till the actual birth of the baby. But on a more positive note, achieving a fertilized embryo is a big step for infertile couples trying out IVF. Another scenario in which the success rate of this technique falls low is when the quality of the eggs released by the woman during ovulation is poor.

Many couples also resort to donor eggs and sperms in such conditions to improve ICSI success rates. Assisted hatching is another method that can be carried out on the embryos before implantation to improve the chances of pregnancy in the woman. In this method, a small hole is created in the outer wall of the embryo by digesting it with an acidic solution and then washed and placed in the culture solution. Overall, this technique if done in the right manner has an extremely high rate of success among couples who take up IVF for addressing infertility.
