In Vitro Fertilization Process

How do you know if the in vitro fertilization process is the right fertility treatment for you?

Couples who are trying to get pregnant have a lot of decisions to make when infertility makes having a child difficult. One of the first decisions that must be made is whether or not to see a fertility specialist. Even if you are not sure that you want to go through the in vitro fertilization process or have any other fertility treatment done, it is still a good idea to have your infertility diagnosed so that you know the reasons you are unable to get pregnant.

Once you have seen a fertility specialist also known as a reproductive endocrinologist, the next decision you will need to make is how far you want to go to get pregnant. If you are considering going through the in vitro fertilization process, you will want to know all about the process so that you

can make an informed decision when it comes to your infertility treatments. When you undergo in vitro fertilization it is important that you and your partner are both comfortable with everything that goes along with the process.

The first part of the in vitro fertilization process will be an assessment by your fertility doctor. In most situations, the woman will be given medication, probably injectables to get the process started. Since it is important for the egg retrieval to be successful that more than one egg is produced in a cycle, the woman must be monitored while she is taking the fertility drugs to be sure they are working correctly. Once the egg retrieval has been done successfully, the eggs and sperm are joined together in the lab.

While it is not common practice for the in vitro fertilization process to involve sperm being injected directly into the egg, it is sometimes done when a specific kind of male factor infertility is diagnosed. If it is found during a semen analysis that the morphology of the sperm is abnormal, the fertility doctor may recommend that when and if the couple decides the in vitro fertilization process is their best for getting pregnant, that intracytoplasmic sperm injection (icsi) also be something that they consider.

No matter if you and your doctor decide to do icsi or not, the next step is waiting to see if the egg becomes fertilized by the sperm. It is very important to understand that when it comes to infertility & reproduction everything really is just a waiting game and timing must be just right for fertilization to happen. This is also the case when it comes to couples who are not going through the in vitro fertilization process but are trying to conceive naturally. The only difference is that during the in vitro fertilization process, more of the process is monitored, so you have a better understanding of what is going and when it is taking place.

After it is found out that at least one of the eggs was fertilized, the doctors will make a decision about the number of embryos that will be involved in the embryo transfer. Most doctors and clinics follow strict guidelines regarding how many embryos they will place into the uterus during the in vitro fertilization process. Be sure that when you are choosing a clinic or doctor that you not only look at their success rates but you should also ask about their policy on how many embryos they will transfer during the in vitro fertilization process.

Since the ultimate goal is for the woman to have a healthy pregnancy ending in a live birth, most doctors only transfer two embryos to increase the chance that at least one of them will implant and turn into a pregnancy. After the embryos have been placed into the uterus, the rest of the process is waiting to see if a pregnancy test comes out positive. Women should try to remember that even if you think that you have ivf pregnancy symptoms you should wait until your doctor says it is okay to take a pregnancy test. While it may be ever so tempting to take one even a day or two early, this is not a good idea as the test may not be accurate and you could end up disappointed.

Couples considering the in vitro fertilization process as a fertility treatment should also remember that it may take more than one cycle to achieve pregnancy. If money is an issue, you may want to talk with your clinic to see if they offer any payment plans for couples in your situation. You should also remember that the in vitro fertilization process is not the only fertility treatment option available. Trying to conceive a child with a fertility treatment is a big decision so make sure that you weigh every option before deciding which one will fit your needs the best.
