Iui Success Rate
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a wonderful technology that can
help you have a child but you should first be able to increase the IUI success rate as it applies to your specific
circumstances. The inability to have a child is very troubling to couples
especially if they have been trying for a long time. This can be very depressing to them and it can also lead to
problems in the relationship. There are various techniques available to couples today so that they can receive the
right treatment based on their specific condition.
Intrauterine insemination is a technique that is used in circumstances when
the woman has difficulty getting pregnant in the natural manner but is fully capable of doing so because her
reproductive system is in full working condition.
Many couples are childless because the problem lies with the man who is infertile or
has very low sperm count or when the man does not have sufficient quantities of motile sperm. In fact, this method
is used very effectively against male factor infertility. This particular type of assisted reproductive technology
is also used by lesbians who require sperm from a donor in order to get pregnant without having to have sexual
intercourse with a man. This technique is more commonly known as artificial insemination and is also used when a
sperm donor has to be used when a man is advised against having a biological child because he carries a genetic
disorder.
The process of intrauterine insemination
IUI takes place by inserting the required amount of sperm in the uterus of a woman using a catheter. The semen
has to be washed carefully first so that all unnecessary matter is removed first. Semen contains a lot of pus cells
as well as chemicals called prostaglandins. If this is introduced directly into the uterus then there is a great
possibility that the woman will suffer from pain due to cramps. Even so, the woman can expect to experience some
discomfort for a period of 12 to 24 hours. Many women worry when there is some discharge from their vagina after
the process but this usually happens because of cervical fluid leaking out and not sperms coming out.
Like all fertility techniques, intrauterine insemination too has different success
rates that vary according to a whole lot of factors. There are many female factors that determine how successful
the insemination process is going to be. To begin with, the process has to be timed exactly so that there is the
greatest possibility of an egg being available at that time.
It will be absolute waste if the insemination is done when there is no egg ready in
the fallopian tube. The doctor usually requires the woman to keep track of her menstrual cycle so that her fertile
period is known. Apart from marking the dates in the calendar she might also be required to keep track of her
temperature.
Many doctors also prefer to combine controlled ovarian hyperstimulation with intra
uterine insemination in order to increase the IUI success rate substantially.
It is possible to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs in the required numbers and
as per a schedule with the aid of certain drugs. However, it should be noted that this is not effective if the
woman has blocked fallopian tubes or if the woman is older than 40 years of age.
It has also been observed that 50 percent of women who underwent 4 treatment cycles
of IUI got pregnant. The key to a higher IUI success rate is therefore sticking to the plan for a minimum of 4
treatment cycles. However, at least 10 to 15 percent of women got pregnant the very first time, but it must be
noted that their age has a very important role to play in this. It is interesting to note that the IUI success rate is no different if the couple suffers from unexplained fertility.
Women who are older than 35 usually do not benefit from the treatment because IUI success rates are very low for
their specific age group and they should look for other methods of fertility treatment.
Doctors have to offer this treatment to couples after carefully studying their
problem and understanding the exact reason for infertility in their case. There are so many different factors that
affect fertility and they work in different combinations that it is impossible to offer a cookie cutter solution to
all childless couples.
Doctors need to do all they can to increase IUI success rates so that their patients
can get pregnant within the first cycle itself.
Doctors usually offer this treatment for three cycles and rarely offer more because
it is unlikely that it will offer results beyond the third try. If they do not get the desired results then they
should quickly look for other methods of assisted reproductive technology.
